How to Mount a 4WD Awning to a Roof Rack or Platform (No Rooftop Tent Needed)
Not everyone running a 4WD awning has a rooftop tent to bolt it to. If your setup is a tray, canopy or bare roof rack, you still need a solid, vibration-proof mounting point — and trying to improvise one with generic brackets is how awnings end up flexing loose on corrugations. Here's how to build a proper mount from scratch.
The two-part system: platform bracket + quick-release bracket
Vantura's roof-platform mounting setup is built from two brackets working together:
- Heavy-Duty L Platform Awning Brackets — these bolt to your roof platform, roof rack or canopy and create the base mounting point.
- Heavy-Duty Quick-Release RTT Awning Brackets — these pair with the L platform brackets so the awning itself can be lifted off without unbolting the whole assembly.
Used together, you get a mounting point that's as rigid as a direct-to-rail RTT mount, but works on any roof platform, rack or canopy with suitable channel spacing.
What's in the L Platform Bracket kit
- 8mm carbon steel construction, black powder-coated finish
- Reinforced gusseted design for rigidity under load
- Long multi-slot platform (~320mm) for flexible positioning along your rack
- Multiple mounting positions on the upright face (~100mm high)
- Sold as a pair, with bracket mounting hardware included
One thing to plan for: channel nuts or fasteners to attach the bracket to your specific rack or platform aren't included, since these vary between roof rack brands. Check your rack's channel spec before ordering.
Choosing your awning
Once the mounting point is sorted, the awning itself comes down to how much shade and coverage you want:
- VO 180 Freestanding Awning — a single-side, 180-degree shelter, good for a simpler setup or a smaller footprint at camp.
- VO 270 Freestanding Awning — wraps around the side and rear corner for close to 12sqm of coverage, with an integrated LED-lit frame welded to the backplate for extra rigidity.
Before you order: checklist
- Measure your roof platform, rack or canopy's mounting channel spacing
- Compare it against the L Platform Bracket's dimension photos
- Confirm your fasteners or channel nuts suit that channel type
- Check the combined load rating of your roof system against the awning you're planning to run
FAQ
Do I need a rooftop tent to use these brackets?
No — the L Platform Awning Brackets are specifically designed for roof platforms, roof racks and canopies where there's no RTT side rail to mount to.
Will these fit my brand of roof rack?
The slotted design suits a range of roof platform, rack and canopy configurations, but channel spacing does vary by brand. Check the dimension photos closely, and send us your rack's measurements first if you're not sure.
Can I still remove the awning easily with this setup?
Yes — that's exactly what pairing the L Platform Brackets with the Quick-Release RTT Awning Brackets gives you: a fixed base on your rack, with an awning that lifts off in seconds when you don't need it.
What load rating should I check before installing?
Check both your roof rack manufacturer's rated load capacity and your awning's weight and wind-load specifications — no universal rating is claimed across every vehicle, rack and awning combination.
