VO 1.2 vs VO 1.4 Rooftop Tent: Which Size Is Right for You?
Vantura's two rooftop tents, the VO 1.2 and the VO 1.4, are built from the same shell, the same ladder and the same hardware. The names refer to the bed width, and that's genuinely the only thing that changes between them. Here's exactly what's different, what's identical, and how to pick between the two.
What's actually different
| VO 1.2 | VO 1.4 | |
|---|---|---|
| Bed size | 205cm x 122cm | 205cm x 131cm |
| Opening size | 211cm x 131cm x 148cm | 211cm x 142cm x 148cm |
| Closing size | 211cm x 131cm x 18cm | 211cm x 142cm x 18cm |
| Tent weight | 60kg | 65kg |
| Package size | 226cm x 145cm x 24.5cm | 226cm x 158cm x 24.5cm |
| Price | $2,499 | $2,699 |
In short: the VO 1.4 gives you roughly 9cm more width across the bed and opening, for 5kg more tent weight and $200 more on the price tag.
What's exactly the same
- 300kg static load rating
- 2.2m aluminium telescopic ladder
- Semi-automatic hydraulic opening
- 70mm foam mattress
- Fly screen, rear door rainfly and 15mm anti-condensation mat
- Lockable latches and LED light
- 2 waterproof storage shoe bags
- Same available options: full-zip removable insulation, 360-degree LED strip, stainless steel gas struts, Anderson DC12V/USB power exchanger, annex shelter room, 180W solar panel
Every bracket, awning, annex and ladder accessory in the Vantura range fits both models identically - sizing only affects the tent shell itself.
Who should choose the VO 1.2
The narrower bed and lighter shell make the VO 1.2 the better pick if you're mostly camping solo or as a couple, running a vehicle where every kilogram of roof load matters, or simply want the lowest weight option for highway stability and fuel use. Check your vehicle's rated roof load against the tent weight plus any awning, solar panel or roof rack you're planning to add - our Weight Management guide walks through how to do that properly.
Who should choose the VO 1.4
The extra 9cm of width makes a real difference for taller sleepers, couples who want more shoulder room, or anyone who occasionally has a small child sharing the tent. It's a better long-term buy if comfort matters more to you than shaving a few kilos off your roof load - just double-check your vehicle can carry the extra 5kg plus whatever else you're mounting.
Before you order
- Confirm your vehicle's rated roof/rack load can handle the tent weight plus any awning, solar panel or roof rack hardware you're adding
- Measure your existing roof rack or platform against the tent's footprint
- Decide whether you want the annex, insulation liner, or 12V power options fitted from the start
- If you're torn between the two, send us your vehicle and typical crew size and we're happy to help you decide
FAQ
Will my awning and brackets fit either tent the same way?
Yes. All Vantura awning brackets, the VO 180, VO 270 and VO 270+ awnings, the annex, and the RTT Ladder Steps fit both the VO 1.2 and VO 1.4 identically.
Is the ladder a different length on the bigger tent?
No - both models use the same 2.2m aluminium telescopic ladder.
Does the extra 5kg on the VO 1.4 actually matter?
It can, depending on your vehicle's rated roof load and what else you're carrying up there. Check the combined weight of the tent, any awning, solar panel and roof rack against your manufacturer's roof load rating before ordering - see our Weight Management guide for how to work this out.
Which one is better for a family?
Both are designed around 2 adults sleeping comfortably, with the VO 1.4 giving a bit more room if a small child is sharing occasionally. For a genuine 4-person setup, most customers pair a rooftop tent with a ground tent or swag for the kids rather than fitting everyone into one shell - see our RTT vs Ground Tent vs Swag comparison for how that works in practice.
