Rooftop Tent vs Ground Tent vs Swag: Which Suits Your Trip?

Three ways to sleep on a camping trip, three very different trade-offs. Here's how a rooftop tent, a traditional ground tent and a swag actually compare once you're out on the road, not just on paper.

Setup time

  • Rooftop tent: Unclip, push up, done — our VO tents are designed for one person to set up in under 30 seconds, with bedding left made up inside.
  • Ground tent: Poles, pegs, guy ropes — 10 to 20 minutes depending on the tent, longer in wind or rain.
  • Swag: Fastest of all to lay out, no assembly required, though you're setting up bedding fresh each night.

Comfort and insulation

  • Rooftop tent: Off the ground, out of the cold air pooling at ground level, with a proper foam mattress (70mm on our VO tents) built in.
  • Ground tent: Comfort depends entirely on what mattress or mat you bring — cold ground can be a real issue without good insulation underneath you.
  • Swag: Closest to the ground, so similarly exposed to cold and damp, though a quality swag mattress helps.

Safety from wildlife and pests

This is where a rooftop tent has a clear edge — sleeping a couple of metres up keeps you away from snakes, ticks, ants and other ground-dwelling wildlife, which matters more in parts of regional Australia than people expect.

Vehicle dependency

  • Rooftop tent: Your bed is attached to your car — if someone needs to duck into town, the whole camp effectively packs up. Worth planning around if you're travelling as a group with a second vehicle.
  • Ground tent / swag: Fully independent of the vehicle — set up camp and drive off without disturbing anything.

Weight and fuel impact

A rooftop tent adds real weight and wind resistance on the roof full-time, affecting fuel use and your vehicle's centre of gravity (see our Weight Management guide). A ground tent or swag packs away inside the vehicle or tray with no ongoing aerodynamic penalty.

Cost

Ground tents and swags are generally the cheaper entry point. Rooftop tents cost more upfront, but you're paying for speed of setup, comfort, and not needing a separate mattress or ground mat — worth weighing against how often you'll actually use it.

FAQ

Which is best for a family?

A rooftop tent's fast setup is a real advantage with tired kids at the end of a long drive day, and our guide to RTT camping with kids covers this in more detail.

Is a swag warmer than a rooftop tent?

Generally no — being off the ground and inside a fully enclosed canvas shell with a thicker mattress gives a rooftop tent the edge for warmth and draught protection.

Can I run a ground tent and a rooftop tent on the same trip?

Yes — plenty of groups run a mix, with the vehicle-based rooftop tent for the main sleeping quarters and a ground tent or swag as an overflow option for extra people.

Does a rooftop tent limit where I can camp?

It rules out a few things a ground tent can do (like walking your gear into a site the car can't reach), but opens up others — parking on uneven or rocky ground that would be miserable for a ground tent or swag.
